12 kombi drivers, conductors detained

AT least 12 kombi drivers and conductors were detained and charged by the police for their role in Monday’s strike by their colleagues in Manzini.
Police Public relations Officer Wendy Hleta confirmed the number yesterday, saying eight were detained at Sigodvweni Police station.
She said one was detained in Manzini while three others faced the same fate in Malkerns, where they were also charged.
Hleta said one of the detainees at Sigodvweni was given a fine option of E2 200 while the rest were given fine options of E800 each.
The police spokesperson said the charges levelled against the detainees included harassment of innocent passengers who were on board public transport and disturbing traffic during the strike. She discouraged such behaviour, saying the police were ready to crack down on such.
Monday’s strike saw commuters being stranded as there was no transport at the bus rank mainly during the day as later on in the afternoon order was restored. One kombi was stoned by the kombi drivers and conductors with passengers inside.
