Maoists kill JD(U) leader in Aurangabad

AURANGABAD: In yet another incident of Maoist violence in Aurangabad district, armed CPI(Maoist) cadre on Thursday night shot dead former Samata Party district president and JD(U) leader Santan Singh (65) at Barem village under Naxal-affected Nabinagar block of the district. Singh was an active member of the ruling JD(U). When contacted, DGP Abhayanand Singh confirmed the incident.

Singh was killed when he was returning to his house at around 11 pm after attending a party at a house at the same village. Village sources said as Singh was on way to his house, around 20-25 armed Maoists intercepted him and forcibly took him away with them. The Maoists took away Singh to a place named Sone Nad in the village itself and then shot him from point blank range. The Maoists fired around 3-4 shots killing Singh on the spot. Hearing sounds of gunshot, family members and villagers rushed to Sone Nad. They found Singh lying in pool of blood.

Getting information, Aurangabad SP S M Jain and SDPO Sanjay Kumar rushed to the spot. Talking to TOI, SP Jain said, “It’s too early to hazard the reason behind the killing. We are looking into all aspects behind this incident.” When asked if some personal enmity was the cause behind Singh’s killing, he said it’s very difficult to say right now and added the motive behind the incident is unconfirmed as of now.

Jain, though, said two motorcycles had been recovered 200 meters away from the scene of the crime which was stolen on Thursday from neighbouring Palamu district in Jharkhand. Prima facie it seems, the Maoists had come on a motorcycle and after executing Singh, fled from the spot, he added. The SP said investigation was on, though no arrest has been made yet.

On reports pouring in that Singh had earlier demanded security for himself from the district police, the SP said, “Never. Never had he asked us for security. Infact, Singh who had no sons but had two nephews had already two licensed arms in his house.”

Meanwhile, Aurangabad JD(U) MP Sushil Singh had condemned Singh’s killing and demanded that the killers be arrested soon. Singh had earlier requested Aurangabad SP to provide security to him
