2 hurt in army-NPA clash in Negros

MANILA, Philippines – A Philippine Army soldier and a suspected member of the New People’s Army (NPA) sustained injuries during a firefight in Negros Occidental Friday morning.

Col. Oscar Lactao, Commander of the 303rd Infantry Birgade of the Philippine Army, said members of the 62nd Infantry Battalion were conducting a random checkpoint in Barangay Punao when suspected rebels aboard a Hyundai Starex and a Nissan Escapade started firing shots at them.

Lactao said the firefight lasted for about 20 minutes.

The names of the injured persons were not yet revealed. The two were rushed to San Carlos City Hospital.
