Albania: Miners’ Hunger Strike Enters 8th Day, No Agreement in Sight

As the renewed hunger strike of the Albanian chrome miners of Bulqiza entered its eighth day, an agreement with Albanian Chrome, the concession company that runs the mine, was still lacking, Tv Klan reported on Monday. The miners have so far rejected an offer from ACR for a pay rise of 20 percent and improvement of work conditions and insist on the dismissal of the mine’s director as a condition to return to work, something which the company considers as non-negotiable.

A few days ago, a meeting between ACR representatives and the miners’ trade union failed to produce an agreement. A previous hunger strike by Albania’s chrome miners in Bulqiza lasted about a month and was interrupted thanks to police intervention due to deteriorating safety conditions inside the mine, where it was being staged.
