Police fired rubber bullets to disperse a service delivery protest on Monday morning in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni.
“About 2 000 residents threw bottles and stones at police when they were told to disperse,” said Captain Pinky Tsinyane.
She said no one was injured.
Protesters barricaded roads with burning tyres and rocks on Monday morning.
Tsinyane said residents gathered at around noon at the Endayeni taxi rank, waiting for community leaders to tell them whether they had permission for a protest march.
She said the situation was calmer later on Monday morning and police were monitoring the area.
Democratic Alliance member Patricia Mokgohlwa said electricity was cut off at around 5am on Monday in Tembisa.
Mokgohlwa said the Ekurhuleni council should explain the electricity cuts before the residents grew more violent. — Sapa
