Governors car torched in PNG protest

The Governor of Papua New Guinea’s Simbu province was shocked to find his official vehicle was set alight during the country’s 36th independence celebrations.

Father John Garia was in the district of Gembolg to announce the funding of a road project when an angry mob threw missiles at him and set his vehicle alight on Friday.

Locals say it was in protest over the provincial government’s alleged failure to upgrade a road linking the district to the capital Kundiawa.
