Palpa traders block traffic to protest ill-treatment of vendors

PALPA, Sept 16: Traders launched transportation strike in district headquarters Tansen on Friday to protest inhumane treatment of street vendors by the police. They blocked traffic near Bus Park area after police used force to chase vendors at footpaths.

Due to the strike, buses and jeeps leaving Tansen were stuck, leaving passengers heading toward Gulmi, Syangja, Butwal and Arghakhanchi stranded.

“The strike won´t continue further because it started from a small argument. We expect the traders to come to an agreement,” said DSP Govinda Thapaliya. He also said they have intensified market inspection as per the direction of the police headquarters.

The team on seized fruits and vegetables, clothing and utensils during market inspection and handed it hover at the offices of Tansen Municipality and District Police Office.

“We will return the seized goods once the traders are ready to pay fine,” Rajendra Bahadur Aryal, executive officer of Tansen Municipality, told Republica.

The Department of Commerce and other concerned government agencies have intensified market inspection throughout the country ahead of Dashain and Tihar festivals.
