Perturbed over the filling up of the dumping ground, residents of Dadumajra held a protest on Friday demanding that the dumping of garbage be stopped at the site. The residents demanded that the garbage be taken to the Garbage Processing Plant.
The residents of Dadumajra have over the past few months complained about the pace at which the dumping ground is filling up. Concern has been raised in the past that there was not much space left and that in another six months to a year, the dumping ground would be full.
The residents stopped the vehicles from carrying garbage and blocked the road. Carrying placards they asked the Municipal Corporation to take immediate action. Officials of the MC visited the protesters and assured them of a solution.
According to the project report, the inerts should not be more than 10 to 15 per cent, the inerts being produced are higher. These are then dumped at the dumping ground. Chemicals like dioxin and furans are being emitted from the plant. A recent report by Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) has highlighted the ill-effects of dioxins and furans. The report has been forwarded to the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee for further investigation.
