Tempers Flare After Enforcers Try To Destroy Rubber Trees

PASIR PUTEH, Sept 14 (Bernama) — There was near riot when enforcers from the Pasir Puteh Land and District Office tried to destroy rubber trees alleged to have been cultivated illegally on government land in Kampung Chelah Chat here, Wednesday.

Some 20 residents of the kampung had gathered there since early morning to to block a bulldozer which was to be used to mow down the three-year-old trees planted on a half hectare site along the Gaal-Jeli road.

“The situation only calmed down after we agreed to negotiate the matter with the Pasir Puteh Land and District Office,” one the residents, Mohd Noor Deraman, 53, told reporters when met at the scene.

He added that the residents, who were notified of the action only two days ago, depended on rubber tappin for their livelihood.
