Garment workers blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong highway for half an hour Saturday morning protesting a road accident that killed their fellow worker in Narayanganj.
The demonstrators set fire to the tempo which overturned at Kanchpur in Sonargaon upazila at around 9:00am, killing Md Mohsin, 30, a worker of SS Garment at Kanchpur BISCIC industrial area, on the spot. He was travelling in the vehicle.
Four other passengers who were injured in the accident were given first aid, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.
Hearing the news, the workers of SS Garment thronged the scene and set the tempo ablaze, said Mezbahuddin, inspector (investigation) of Sonargaon Police Station.
The protestors also blocked the highway around 9:30am, halting transport movement and creating traffic jam.
On information, firefighters rushed in and put out the blaze.
Transport movement on the highway became normal around 10:00am after police went to the spot and brought the situation under control, the inspector said.
The tempo driver went into hiding soon after the incident.
