Condemned prisoners threaten to go on hunger strike

PESHAWAR: Condemned prisoners in the Peshawar Central Prison on Friday threatened to start hunger strike till death if the authorities did not shift them from the death cells to other barracks, police officials and family sources said. On October 4, 2010, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly amended the colonial-era Prisons Act 1894, under which the condemned prisoners were to be kept in separate barracks instead of the death cells. The assembly passed the Prisons (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) (Amendment) Bill, 2010 under which Section 30(2) of the Prisons Act was amended.
