NWest village calm after protest

JOHANNESBURG – Chaneng village, near Phokeng, was calm on Thursday morning after protesting residents blocked roads earlier in the week, North West police said.

“We still have police monitoring the situation, but it is calm today [Thursday],” Lt-Col Lesego Metsi said.

Residents blocked main roads leading to the N4 and Steal Drifts Mine with rocks and burning tyres from Tuesday until 4.30pm on Wednesday. No property was damaged and no injuries were reported.

Locals, most of them unemployed, were unhappy the mine hired people from other areas, as it was situated on their land.

Local government MEC Paul Sebego addressed residents, and promised to consult with parties involved.
