TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The West Lombok police in West Nusa Tenggara province have apprehended 10 civilians suspected of involvement in the attack on a police station and the West Lombok police chief’s residence. “Witnesses and perpetrators are being questioned,” Boy Rafli Amar, spokesman for the National police Headquarters, said on Sunday.
The assault on the police station and the police chief’s residence was committed by about 100 residents of Kedaro Village, on Saturday around 12:30 local time. “They demanded the release of two of their residents, Maisun and Sharim Efendi,” said Amar. Maisun and Sharim were arrested for setting on fire and damaging PT Indotan Tambang’s drilling equipment in Sekotong on August 8. The act was committed as a show of protest against the company’s mining activities in the area.
The riots which followed the protests claimed the life of a resident and injuring another. Saliki, 30, died of a gunshot wound, while Saiful, 27, was injured. Amar said that Saiful was shot on his left foot and is now being treated at the Mataram Hospital.
