Workers protest at Maruti plant

Tension mounted outside the Manesar-based car manufacturing plant of Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) as a large number of factory workers from across the city held a demonstration on Thursday.
Heavy contingent of police force was deployed inside the plant, while an equal number
stood guard outside the premises.

The meeting was called by MSIL workers — who defied the company’s directive of signing the good conduct bond — and remained away from work.

The workers have been demanding formation of another worker’s union by the name of Maruti Suzuki Employees Union (MSEU), which the Haryana government has refused to recognise.

Around 25 workers’ unions of various companies reportedly participated in the meeting called by MSEU.

“We don’t want to strike work. We want to work with freedom and did not violate the law. The company is forcing us to accept the bond. Indeed, the authorities don’t want the factory to run peacefully,” said Subhash Diwan, secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Gurgaon.

The workers alleged that the management was behaving like a dictator and imposing their unlawful demands on them. They also alleged that they were being targeted by the management for going on a strike in June.
