Dhaka-Sylhet highway blocked after accident

Narayanganj, Aug 29 (bdnews24.com) — Workers of a garment factory have demonstrated and blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Narayanganj for half an hour, after one of their colleagues received injuries in a road accident.

The workers of Sinha Textiles also ransacked several vehicles and set two motorcycles on fire during their demonstration, in protest of their co-worker’s accident, on Monday morning at Kanchpur.

A chase and counter-chase took place between the workers and police after the police rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. The incident left at least 15 people injured, including police officials.

Police fired teargas shells and rubber bullets to control the situation during the unrest, Narayanganj police superintendent Sheikh Nazmul Alam said.

He said that a bus hit the worker of the factory when she was crossing the road around 11am, leaving her severely injured.

Police gradually calmed the situation down, he added.
