Unrest continues: Angry mob kills PC

The growing unrest between civilians and the security forces spread to Puttalam town yesterday when an angry mob hacked to death a police constable last evening. The slain constable has been identified as Bandara.

Eyewitnesses said the 23-year-old constable was on his way back to the station after traffic duty when he was severely assaulted by the angry mob in front of the Sathosa retail outlet.

The area turned in to a mini battle field with personnel from the Special Task Force and the Army deployed to maintain law and order.  The security forces had to fire into the air for some 10 minutes before the mob was dispersed.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident at Manangunduwa in Puttalam five people suffered gunshot injuries in another clash with the police at about 6.30 p.m. yesterday.
