BLOEMFONTEIN – Groups of Kroonstad and Maokeng residents started protesting on Monday about a lack of electricity, Free State police said.
Police spokesman Maseleka Langa said residents started gathering in groups in Maokeng around 10am. They blocked off the main street with stones and other objects.
He said the groups moved through Maokeng looking for support.
Schoolchildren joined the protest when schools closed for the afternoon.
A Moqhaka municipality spokesman said there were only pockets of power in the municipality because a cable was stolen and damaged.
Eskom workers were repairing the damage, but could take until Tuesday afternoon to complete the job.
Langa said police had advised foreign tuckshop owners to close for the rest of the day.
