Police have arrested 17 people in New Caledonia allegedly linked to protests against the country’s state-owned airline.
Four people were killed in the protests on the island of Mare.
Protests over the price of Air Caledonie’s tickets and land right issues are behind the many months of protests on the island.
Pacific Beat’s correspondent in New Caledonia, Anne Pitoseit says some of them are accused of murder and others of using violence.
“The prosecutor said there would be new arrests in the next few days.
“The armed forces will stay in the island – well, as long as necessary,” she said.
