Samwu strikers appear in court

Eight people believed to be striking members of the South African Municipal Workers Union are due to appear in court in George on Wednesday on a charge of malicious damage to property.

The suspects were arrested during a protest outside the George council on Tuesday.

Municipal workers are currently on strike demanding an 18 percent wage hike while the employer is offering six percent.

The police’s Bernadine Steyn said, “Garbage bins were set alight after which stones were thrown. The window of the SAPS vehicle was damaged and stun grenades were thrown to disperse the crowd.”
