Ultimatum from New Caledonia protesters

Community groups calling for price cuts from New Caledonia’s domestic airline have given the carrier until Tuesday to meet their demands.

Otherwise, they say, it will face further strike action.

Angry residents blockaded some of the French Pacific territory’s airports earlier this month – in particular, on Mare Island – which resulted in the shooting deaths of four people.

The blockade was lifted after security personnel were brought in to break up the demonstrations.

But reporter Anne Pitoiset says the local protest groups say they will occupy the airports again if their ticket price demands are not met by Tuesday.

The committee are asking for a return ticket at 10,000 francs ($US120) against a price of 25,000 francs ($299) now.
