Police Kill 2 Persons In Gov Obi’s Town

Two persons were Saturday evening, reported killed by men of the Nigeria Police Force in Agulu community, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

About four others were also said to have sustained various degrees of injuries as a result of sporadic shooting by the police men.

A police post situated in Nwagu Agulu, a popular market in the community was also said to have been razed by youths of the community who were protesting the killing, after they sacked police men who were on duty at the post.

An eye witness who narrated to LEADERSHIP how the fracas started said that some police officers who man a check-point at the Nwagu Agulu Junction had stopped a commercial motorcyclist, and attempted to extort bribe from him when a relation of his tried to intervene but was immediately shot dead.

Our source who however said that no one knew what transpired between the deceased and the police officer to have warranted being shot added that the deceased whose identity LEADERSHIP could not uncover at the time of filing this report had attempted to free his brother from the police when a disagreement ensued.

The shooting of the young man who another source said was a trader at the junction, and an indigene of the community was followed by a violent protest against the police officers at the check point by youths, resulting in the police spraying bullets in the air to scare off the protesters.

It was gathered that the other victim was gunned down while the police was trying to keep the protesters at bay. About four of the youths who were involved in the protest were also said to have sustained injuries, while the police officers fled the scene.

Police Public Relations Officer for Anambra Police Command, Mr Emeka Chukwuemeka(ASP) in a telephone chat with our reporter confirmed the incidence, but denied that two persons were killed in the incident.

Chukwuemeka said that only one person was killed, and one person also wounded. He also disclosed that the officer whose name he refused to mention has been arrested and will be tried today.
