50 Philadelphia teens arrested in violation of curfew

About 50 teenagers were arrested for violating Philadelphia’s new curfew law for minors that took effect Friday night, police said.

The arrests began at about 9 p.m. Friday on South Street, a popular 10-block area of bars, restaurants and stores near downtown, police spokeswoman Officer Tanya Little told the Associated Press.

Mayor Michael Nutter last week instituted a 9 p.m. curfew for those younger than 18 on Fridays and Saturdays in downtown and University City.

The areas have been plagued recently by “flash mobs,” swarms of teenagers responding to Twitter and text messages to meet up in a certain area, often inundating the neighborhoods.

Fines for violating the curfew range from $100 to $300 for a first arrest and $500 dollars for subsequent violations, police said.
