Aug 11, Valachchenai: A protest campaign is underway in Sri Lanka’s Eastern town of Valachchenai today, sources from the area said.
The government offices, shops and other business places were closed in the area due to the protest.
A group of people clashed with the police yesterday over an incident related to an attack against a woman, sources said.
Mobs threw stones at Valachchenai police station injuring four policemen and three civilians. A police vehicle and a passenger bus were also damaged in the clash.
The villagers handed over a suspect to the Police later demanded that the man be handed over to them to take the law in to their hands against the suspect. They later attacked the police for rejecting their demand.
The heated situation prevailed today also.
