“The Libertad sugar factory is springing back to life but not without problems. This morning a group of employees were not allowed access into the compound when it was decided that the employees would be laid off after the theft of three bronze bearing said to value thousands of dollars. As word spread through the village, more than a hundred men had gathered in front of the factory’s gates and soon after a fire was lit using old tires. By all accounts, the blaze caused large clouds of smoke over the area leading Corozal Police to call on the Corozal fire department to extinguish the fire. We were unable to get any official comment from Mexican group Destill’s International who is now the owners of factory but we have been reliably informed that the 3 bronze bearing weighing 400 pounds each were stolen. Corozal police considers the situation volatile as workers will seek rehiring on Wednesday.
