BEIRUT: Tyre residents held a strike Saturday in several areas in protest against waning electricity supply and warned of further protests if the issue is not resolved, the National News Agency reported.
The Lebanese Army, Internal Security Forces and United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon arrived to areas where tens of young men had blocked roads with burning tires. The personnel were able to remove the tires and reopen the roads.
Tyre residents have been protesting for weeks against water shortages and long hours of electricity cut offs.
The heads of the Tyre municipalities called on Energy and Water Minister Jibran Bassil to resolve the problem, which is becoming more difficult to deal with in the summer season, and threatened to take “undesirable” steps if the situation continues.
