Parliment inaction on prison conditions sparks protest

BEIRUT: Parliament’s decision Thursday not to reduce the length of a “prison year” to nine months provoked angry responses from several sectors Friday, as relatives of prisoners blocked the airport road in Beirut.

The airport road was blocked for around an hour Friday afternoon, as angry relatives burned tires to protest Parliament’s decision, before the road was cleared by personnel from the Internal Security Forces.

Meanwhile, 119 prisoners in bloc B of Roumieh Prison went on hunger strike to protest government inaction.
