Chile police, students clash in protests

In Chile, riot police clashed with high school and university students in the streets of the capital Santiago and in a number of other cities on Thursday.

Police detained 552 students and at least 14 police officers and two young people were injured.

Police used water cannon and tear gas to break up the demonstrators, pressing for major changes to Chile’s underfunded and unequal public education system.

Hundreds of thousands of people have rallied in the streets across the country in the past few weeks demanding the resignation of President Sebastian Pinera.
