Guinea land clash leaves 60 wounded, witness says

A witness says soldiers have clashed with villagers in southern Guinea over an apparent land dispute in the West African nation.

Witness Jean Kolie says 60 people were wounded in the clash that erupted last week when residents refused to let the government expropriate their land for oil and rubber production.

He says soldiers are detaining residents at a military camp, and that 100 people fled the violence and sought refuge with aid agencies in the area.

Kolie spoke late Monday, saying residents had been too afraid to speak out sooner.
