Cops use teargas to quell protest

Aug. 1: Tense situation prevailed in Adilabad town following a lathicharge and use of teargas police to disperse members of the Private Tourist and Travel Drivers Association affiliated to Citu and residents of Bhagath Singh Nagar who stormed the collectorate, over their long pending demands on Monday morning. Two policemen and 10 agitators were injured in the clash between police and agitators.

The agitators tried to stop the collector A. Ashok’s vehicle, demanding that he solve their demands. Drivers thronged the collectorate, demanding that the state government implement minimum wage while residents of Bhagat Singh Nagar demanded basic amenities in their colony. Two women of Oddaribasti who were going to hospital and were not connected with the agitation were injured in the police lathi-charge. Both groups argued with police for obstructing them from entering into the collectorate and there was a clash between police and agitators. Police resorted to a lathi- charge and later burst tear gas shells to disperse the agitators, when a few agitators of them, including women, hurled stones at police.
