Council workers in La Linea used burning tyres to block the access road into Gibraltar yesterday in a protest over pay. The previous day they marched on the border itself, as well as holding sit-ins in the council itself. This is not the first time the workers have resorted to such aggressive tactics, having done the same thing last year. There is one key difference though. Whereas last year the Popular Party’s Alejandro Sánchez was mayor of the Spanish border town, now the council is led by PSOE’s Gemma Araujo. The workers said they had not been paid in nearly three months and that they would keep up the protests until they got what they were owed. They plan daily protests between 9.30am and 10.30am.
