Kibaale school closed over strike

St. Adolf Tibeyalirwa Secondary School, Muhorro in Kibaale district has been closed, following a violent strike by the students.

The strike started on Sunday when students turned rowdy and hurled stones at the headmaster, Deo Mwebe, accusing him of not caring about their education.

The Police in Muhorro was overwhelmed by the big number of students. The Police then called for re-enforcements from Kagadi and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces to calm the situation. Several security personnel have since pitched camp at the school.

Earlier, the Police fired live bullets in the air and tear gas to force the students out of the school compound.

The students are said to have camped there, vowing to beat up the headmaster and his deputy, John Baptist Rujwiga.

The students complained of severe beating, charges for extra lessons, teachers’ dodging classes and substandard mocks for Senior Four students. St. Adolf has 950 students, with 220 in Senior Four.

The students temporarily blocked the Kagadi-Kyenjojo road for over an hour until the UPDF soldiers removed the barricades.

“We have not had any practical since the year begun and yet we have to sit for exams and sciences are compulsory,” a female student said.

The headmaster, however, attributed the chaos to lack of funds from the Government to run the school.
