MMDA workers’ protest turns ugly

MANILA, Philippines – A protest by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) workers on Wednesday turned after violent after they clashed with the agency’s civil disturbance personnel, a report said.

The MMDA employees allegedly sought to block EDSA to voice out their demands for better benefits such as rice bonus and housing.

The agency responded by deploying security personnel to stop the protesters.

The protest ended after MMDA officials vowed to look into the workers’ demands.

According to Ferdinand Gaite, official of the Confederation for Unity, Recognition and Advancement of Government Employees (COURAGE), the MMDA employees want management to sign their Collective Negotiations Agreement and the implementation of an additional P6,000 in their minimum pay.

MMDA union vice-president Mar Araba accused the government agency of planning to sack some workers under a reorganization plan.
