Kenya: Murang’a Student Injured During Strike Dies in Hospital

A secondary school in Kandara has died while being treated after he was injured during a strike by students. Patrick Kihara Maina, whowas a student atGaichanjiru Boys Secondary School, was said to have been seriously injured during the strike. He died yesterday at St Murumba Hospital in Thika.

The 20-year- old student died while undergoing an operation procedure. Several other students who were injured were treated and discharged. Following the strike, more than 400 students from the school have been sent home. Property estimated to be worth millions of shillings was destroyed during the rampage.

The students were protesting over alleged harsh treatment by the deputy principal. Maina’s father, Samuel Maina Kimani, is a head teacher at Makomboki Primary School in Murang’a. Area DC Kennedy Sese said the school administration called police to quell the strike. The officers fired several times in the air and lobbed teargas canisters, he said.
