Guinea-Bissau health workers launch five-day strike

BISSAU — Health workers in the west African country Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday began a five-day strike to press demands pay bonuses and better working conditions, their unions said.

Hospitals and health centres in Bissau were closed on Wednesday, although basic services were available at the capital’s main public hospital.

The strikers are demanding nine months in back payment of bonuses for working nights, hiring of medical interns who completed their training and better working conditions.

A striking nurse said the government failed to honour a pledge to meet the demands but health ministry officials could not be reached for comment.
