Soweto protesters torch councillor’s home

Chiawelo residents have set their local councillor’s house on fire and blockaded roads in the Soweto neighbourhood with burning tyres.

It is believed the protest was triggered by an ongoing power outage in the area.

One local said police arrived to try and move them away, but residents have pelted them with stones.

Thick black smoke could be seen coming out of the rooms of the Councillor Johannes Nemaungani’s house and garage as neighbours and journalists carried crying and screaming children out of the building.

Defiant residents said they will not leave the area until he is removed from his post.

Two fire trucks were called in to extinguish the fire, but his car was completely destroyed.

Police have been monitoring the protesters.
