Police clear protesters in Central

Police have cleared hundreds of protesters who had staged a sit-down protest across both sides of Connaught Road Central, paralyzing traffic.

They had refused to leave the area after taking part in the July 1st pro-democracy rally, and had broken through a police cordon to take over the street.

Another group of protesters had faced off against police outside the Bank of China Tower.

At one point, chaotic scenes broke out as police tried in vain to control the protesters. One demonstrator was apparently hurt and police used pepper spray to subdue some protesters.

The officers moved in shortly after Chief Superintendent Kenneth Lee announced that police would take ‘robust action to disperse the crowd unless they leave immediately.’
