LUDHIANA: The sanitary workers, who are employed on a temporary basis, staged a protest against mayor Hakam Singh Giaspura in front of the C Zone building of the corporation on Wednesday. Later, they also gheraoed his car. The employees were demanding permanent jobs.
When the mayor left the building, some protestors lay down in front of his car in a bid to stop him. Cops allegedly resorted to a lathicharge for dispersing them from the spot. The sanitary workers said they are employed only for two or three months which is unjustified and demanded that they be given at least daily minimum wages.
Veer Surinder Kalyan, president of the sanitation committee said that the employees are being employed on a temporary basis and have not even been getting their wages. He added, AK Sinha, commissioner, municipal corporation had given him time for a meeting on Monday, where they would discuss the matter in detail.
Meanwhile, the MC officials remained tight-lipped on the matter, while denying that the employees were lathicharged.
