Labourers block road to protest against factory owners

LAHORE: Hundreds of workers blocked main road in Chuhng area on Tuesday after owners of a factory allegedly tortured four of their colleagues. The owners called in police who brutally beat the protesters, including women, at the behest of the owners and rounded up more than a dozen of them. The labourers told Daily Times that they had long been demanding payment under the minimum wage policy of the government as well as other benefits such as social security. They also said that the owners were not even giving them the appointment letters to hide their business from the government while they also tortured four of their colleagues, Rajab, Abdul Rehman, Saleem and Arif. They said that they negotiated with the owners on Tuesday while another meeting would be held today (Wednesday) after which they would decide the future course of action. Chuhng Station House Officer Nazir Hussain told Daily Times that the policemen did not torture any labourer on the behalf of the factory owners but they wanted them to disperse because of the massive traffic jams they were causing. He further said that he personally met the owners and urged them to treat the labourers as human beings and provide them all the due facilities. staff report\06\29\story_29-6-2011_pg13_5
