5 wounded as troops storm Venezuelan prison

GUATIRE, Venezuela (AP) — National Guard troops have stormed a Venezuelan prison days after a bloody riot, leaving four troops and one inmate wounded.

Relatives of prisoners have been protesting outside the El Rodeo I prison in Guatire, east of Caracas.

Deputy Justice Minister Nestor Reverol says four National Guard troops and one prisoner were wounded by gunshots during the troop invasion.

Gunshots are ringing out and hundreds of relatives are weeping outside the prison.

National Guard Gen. Luis Motta Dominguez tells state television that the violence was ignited when troops began carrying out a search operation to disarm inmates.

A riot in the prison Sunday left 22 inmates dead.
