Msunduzi residents stage protest

It has been just over a week since ward councillors took office in Msunduzi municipality, and already service delivery protests have broken out.

Police are busy monitoring Georgedale, which is close to Camperdown, after about 300 angry community members blocked roads with burning tyres this morning, obstructing traffic.

A car was also set alight in the centre of Selby Msimang Road.

Police spokesperson Joey Jeevan says when officers arrived at the scene, they protestors threw stones at them.

She says several police vehicles were damaged.

“Police requested that the crowd stop, and were forced to retaliate and fire stun grenades to disperse the crowd,” she said.

“At this stage the police have the situation under control. There is a contingency of [SAPS] members at the scene. Police are investigating a case of public violence and several people have been taken in for questioning.”
