Rainbow Chickens workers’ strike continues

More than 4,000 workers at Rainbow Chickens’ processing and farm plants say their two week long nationwide strike is nowhere near over. The Food and Allied Workers’ Union (Fawu) wants better wages and reduced working hours for its members.

Fawu’s Sipho Khumalo said they are not sure when they will return to the negotiating table. “We believe that more than 90 percent of our members are out on strike because both farms and processing plants in the Western Cape are out on strike, as well as in KwaZulu-Natal both farms and processing plants are out on strike,” he said.

Agriculture MEC Gerrit van Rensburg said the situation needs to be resolved soon. “The chicken industry is very important for us in the Western Cape, it is really important that we resolve the problem as soon as possible. We want to ask the people who are working there, please come to the table that we try together to solve the problems,” he said.
