Rio de Janeiro firefighters are on the streets again to demand higher salaries and the release of their nearly 400 colleagues who were arrested in a protest over the weekend.
About 100 firefighters are protesting on Monday, two days after the arrests police made arrests as some 2,000 people tried to invade the fire department headquarters to demand improvements.
Rio state Gov. Sergio Cabral has issued a statement praising the state’s nearly 17,000 firefighters for their work, but calling the protesters “irresponsible.”
The firefighters arrested on Saturday may be charged with rebellion, causing damages and failing to provide care for the population.
