Prisoners protest in Hawkes Bay

Twelve prisoners are protesting at Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison after one of them had their security classification changed.

The prisoners are locked in a wing of the prison.

Prison Services General Manager Brendan Anstiss says because of the experience and professionalism shown by staff, there is no risk to the public.

He says no staff have been injured.

The protest started just before 5pm this afternoon when one of the prisoners became agitated after he was reclassified to maximum security status.
