Uganda: Tea Factory Workers Strike Over Pay

Kabarole — Hundreds of workers of Hima Tea Factory in Kyenjojo District went on strike on Friday, protesting against what they called poor pay and maltreatment.

A source at the factory, who preferred anonymity, said the workers, mainly tea leaf harvesters, are demanding a pay raise for a kilo of harvested tea leaves from the current Shs70 to Shs100.

The workers complained of maltreatment, saying the company does not provide them proper medical care whenever they fall sick. The workers later called off the strike after the company management accepted to address their grievances in July, in a meeting that was attended by representatives of the workers’ union and the security personnel from Kabarole and Kyenjojo districts.

Several company property was reportedly destroyed during the strike.

Striking workers reportedly harassed one of the factory managers.
