SANTIAGO, June 1 (Xinhua) — An estimated 25,000 Chilean university students took to the streets on Wednesday to demand higher state budgets for public universities.
This was the fourth student protests in one month.
At least 15,000 students joined the Wednesday’s march in capital Santiago, and 7,000 students gathered in front of the National Congress in Valparaiso, about 80 km northwest of Santiago. Similar protests were reported in other cities including Concepcion, Valdivia and Iquique.
Students demanded for more funds for public universities so as to offer more scholarships and ensure better development of schools. They also asked for better terms of bank loans to pay for their higher education.
