Savar, June 2 (bdnews24.com)—Agitating workers of an apparel factory have vandalised at least 15 readymade garment (RMG) units in Ashulia, forcing their closure.
Authorities later declared ‘holiday’ in those factories for Thursday.
Industrial police zone-1 (Ashulia) deputy director Mohammad Foyezul Kabir told bdnews24.com trouble begun in a vest factory, Horizon Fashion Wear Limited, at Ghoshbagh in Ashulia around 9:30am.
The Horizon management dismissed two employees —DGM Mohammad Masud and assistant manager (production) Kamal Hossain —for picking an altercation with them on Wednesday, he said.
As they came to know about the dismissal, some 400 workers started pelting brickbats and took out a procession inside the factory, demanding reinstatement of Masud and Hossain.
At one stage the workers came out on the Zirabo street and vandalised windowpanes of adjacent 14/15 factories, the official claimed.
Horizon Fashion Wear, Macpie Sweater Limited, Hatchon Korea Garments, Ezax Sweaters Limited, Southern Fashion Limited, Z BD International, and Mascot group were among the factories closed after the workers’ unrest.
RAB and Industrial Police later brought the situation under control.
“The situation is now under control and none has been arrested,” said Ashulia police chief Sirajul Islam. “No complaint has been lodged from the factory authorities.”
