JORHAT: Thousands of tea garden workers of Chinamora, Murmuria, Hatigarh and Baghdhora estates in the district have decided to start an indefinite strike unless their ten-point charter of demands is fulfilled.
The workers, under the leadership of Assam Chah Mazdur Sangha (ACMS), have submitted a memorandum to the authorities concerned on Wednesday. ACMS convener of Hatigarh tea garden Tipeswar Koiri said, “We have apprised the authorities concerned of the problems faced by tea garden workers. They have agreed in principle to address our issues as early as possible and assured us to fulfill the demands after the main tea production season arrives in the gardens.”
Jogesh Kandha, a garden worker of Chinamora tea garden and the executive member of Chah Shramik Mukti Sangram Samiti, said, “Our demands include an increase in daily wages of labourers, regular ration for workers’ families, a health assistant at garden dispensaries, payment of pending provident fund, stop land acquisition in garden areas and implement the announcement made last year to increase the daily wage of Rs 5 at the earliest.”
