Joburg meter readers on strike

Meter readers at Johannesburg Meter Services (JMS) have gone on strike over a wage increase dispute, the SA Municipal Workers Union said on Thursday.

“Workers have currently gathered outside the JMS meter reading company in Randburg, protesting and demanding that the company gives all workers what they deserve,” said spokesman Tahir Sema in a statement.

He said the JMS had offered a wage increase of R800 at a meeting with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), but was now offering only R500.

The striking workers were demanding a R950 increase.

JMS was not immediately available for comment. – Sapa
