More police inside Free Trade Zone

The police have fanned out into several areas surrounding the Free Trade Zone (FTZ) following yesterday’s protests by garment sector workers over the proposed private pension scheme, a female trade unionist said today.

Sujeewa Nelummani with the National Workers Congress (NWC) said the police deployment comes after some 55 union activists and employees attached with the apparel sector in the FTZ at Katunayake were arrested overnight in connection with the protests on Tuesday.
Some 30 plus persons have already been released on police bail after being detained overnight, she said.
