Prison authorities have said the hunger strike launched by inmates at the Welikada Prison in Colombo has spread to prisons in other parts of the country.
Commissioner General of Prisons, Major General V.R. De Silva has told the media that several inmates from the Mahara and Bogambara Prisons have also commenced a hunger strike.
Hundreds of prisoners on death rowwhose sentences have been commuted to life in prison last week ccommenceda hunger strike at the Welikada Prison calling the authorities to grant them a pardon.
Their demand was made to coincide with the 2,600th Sambuddhathva Jayanthi celebrations that was commemorated last week.
According to de Silva, while a discussion was held yesterday with authorities, the matter is to be resolved this week after holding another discussion.
